Life In The Time (2021)

with AMINA Muslim Women’s Resource Centre

As a creative practitioner on this project I facilitated a series of online creative writing workshops combined with the use of postcards, illustration and collage as ways of exploring and documenting BME women’s experiences of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The collection of postcards, which were sent via the post back to the AMINA office, created a tactile, visual artwork which combined with collaborative poetry sessions to provide a range of ways for participants to express themselves and share their experiences.

This was part of an ambitious creative project alongside Annie George and Raman Mundair. Read more about the project here, and explore all the artworks via the online exhibition website:

Life in the Time online exhibition

Life in the Time is an urgent call to action to address the lack of support for marginalised and socially excluded women. Over one hundred Muslim, BME women came together in early 2021 to connect, reflect and create, a series of culturally responsive and mindfully curated online sessions. The poems, films and images below are the tangible expressions of these experiences. A reflection on the past, an acknowledgement of our present and a message for the future: when all this is over, and forgotten. A message to generations to come and the future selves of the women who created this work.

“We were not voiceless, it’s just no one was listening.”

The exhibition toured digitally around the websites of leading Scottish arts institutions: CCA Glasgow, Traverse Theatre, Aberdeen Arts Centre, Tramway, An Lanntair, Perth Theatre and Concert Hall and DCA.
